#124: Nishe Patel – Our Coaching Clients are More Capable Than We Ever Know
When we truly trust a client with our thinking, we can make space for them to use it in their own way. This trust is at the heart of Nishe Patel’s coaching practice, and in this episode of The Coach’s Journey Podcast she explains how occupying a space of not-knowing can pave the way to deep and genuine connections between coaches and their clients.
In conversation with Alex Whitton, Nishe brings her expertise to bear on vital questions about the very nature of the curiosity that we prize so highly in coaching and how we can harness curiosity in the spirit of play, creativity and an interest in the person rather than the problem.
Nishe experienced a magical moment when she first encountered coaching, and she speaks about the one question that brought her to tears when it was first asked to her within a thoughtfully held coaching framework. This magic gave her the confidence to quit her job in order to embark on several years of training that transformed her career and her life.
Nishe’s training includes neuro-linguistic programming, hypnosis, and emotion-focused therapy, and she discusses the benefits of being able to integrate working with the unconscious as well as the conscious mind in her practice. Nishe also explains how taking a step back from her coaching career in order to recover from an operation produced insights into the expectations she placed on herself and her clients that would reshape her approach to her work.
The rise of AI coaching and mentoring are discussed, along with the principles that underpin various modalities of practice with an ever-increasing reach and appeal.
After over a decade in practice, Nishe remains hugely excited by the learning and development that coaching still has to offer her. This episode captures the unfolding nature of a coaching practice, as Nishe shares how she is still discovering new layers of meaning in her work.
Nishe and Alex also talk about:
How to create the conditions for a deep connection with coaching clients that goes beyond cognitive understanding
Striking a balance between reassurance and challenge
How to ensure your business enables you to live the lifestyle you want to lead
The times when coaches need to disappear for their clients to own their growth
How to let go of the need to know why, in order to be with what is
